Ernest is a beautiful and complex character. His EX gives him the power to read exactly what others are feeling. He's very polite and cares deeply for his friends, but at the same time, he wants to be alone, and hates the fact that he feels that way.
Ernest's closest friend is, of course, Gareas Elidd. When they were both candidates at GOA, Gareas was the first to really talk to the shy, quiet kid. Later on, Ernest swore he would become a pilot so that he could help protect Gareas, whose torment he could feel. Ernest's feelings for Gareas are very deep, indeed. (Yes.)

In a battle against VICTIM, Gareas got impatient and rushed out to attack (come on, Garu, you idiot!). Ernest came out to distract the VICTIM, saving Gareas and sacrificing his own life.
Ernest and his brother, Erts, have basically no relationship at all. In fact, I don't recall them ever interacting at all. So in short, they're not close. Chances are, they were separated when they were very young and adopted by different families, which would explain their differing last names as well.
